Tofu, also known as bean curd, is a soft and mild plant-based protein made from soybeans. It’s rich in iron, calcium, and protein—nutrients that support healthy growth, strong bones, and muscle development in babies. Its creamy texture and neutral flavor make it an easy, versatile first food that blends well with both savory and sweet dishes.

Nutritional Information
Tofu is packed with essential amino acids, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids that aid brain and heart health. Choose soft or silken tofu for early stages of weaning, as it’s smoother and easier to mash. Firm tofu works better for finger foods or pan-seared cubes as your baby grows. Always opt for plain, unsalted tofu and check labels to ensure it’s calcium-set, providing extra bone-strengthening benefits.

Allergen Note
Tofu is made from soy, which is a common allergen. When introducing tofu, start with a small amount of soft tofu and observe your baby for about 2 hours. Signs of a soy allergy can include hives, rash, swelling of the lips or face, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, or wheezing. If mild symptoms occur, stop feeding the food and consult your healthcare provider. Seek urgent medical help if your baby has difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or becomes very lethargic.

How to serve tofu by age

Baby-Led Weaning

From 6+ months, offer large, finger-like strips of firm tofu. It can be served raw or lightly pan-fried. The shape is easy for a baby to hold, and the soft texture is safe for them to manage.

6–8 months

Smooth purée or mash
Blend silken or soft tofu into a smooth purée. Mash firm tofu with a fork. Mix with vegetable or fruit purées.

9–11 months

Crumbled or small, soft cubes
Offer small, soft cubes of firm tofu as a finger food. Crumbled tofu can be used as a substitute for scrambled eggs.

12+ months

Bite-sized cubes or strips
Serve strips or cubes of firm tofu, lightly pan-fried or baked. Add to mild curries or noodle dishes.

18+ months

Regular pieces
Can be served as part of family meals.

Choking hazards & safety

Ensure tofu is cut into appropriate sizes for your child's age. Firm tofu is generally soft and not a high-risk choking food, but always supervise mealtimes.
