Sweet potato is a naturally sweet, soft-root vegetable loved by babies for its creamy texture and mild flavor. It provides beta-carotene (vitamin A), vitamin C, and potassium—supporting vision, immunity, and healthy digestion. When cooked until very tender, sweet potato becomes smooth and mashable, making it ideal for early weaning.
Nutritional Information
Sweet potatoes are rich in antioxidants, fibre, and complex carbohydrates that provide steady energy. Choose firm, unblemished sweet potatoes with vibrant orange or purple flesh, which are nutrient-dense varieties. Fresh is best, but frozen cubes or purées can be convenient if unsweetened and additive-free.
How to serve sweet potato by age
Baby-Led Weaning
- Finger food: Offer thick wedges, long strips, or mash patties; they should squish easily between fingers.
- Grip tips: Coat with baby cereal or leave some skin on for grip (remove before baby eats).
Safety: Ensure pieces are soft enough to break apart with very little pressure.
6–8 months
- Purée: Steam or roast peeled sweet potato until extremely soft, then blend or mash to desired smoothness.
9–11 months
- Offer soft cooked/baked strips, mashed sweet potato with lumps, or soft fritters/patties.
- Combine with lentils, fish, beans, or leafy greens for more texture and nutrients.
- Allow baby to practise scooping with a preloaded spoon.
12+ months
- Serve pincer-grip soft cooked cubes or add sweet potato to curries, stews, pancakes, or baked bites.
- Offer roasted wedges with dips (yogurt, hummus) for skill-building.
- Encourage fork use for coordination.
Choking hazards & safety
- Undercooked or firm sweet potato is a major choking hazard, as it can be dense and difficult to break down.
- NEVER offer raw or firm-cooked sweet potato in any form.
- ALWAYS ensure sweet potato should squish easily between fingers, soft, mashable, and moist. Avoid dry baked chunks that can crumble into hard pieces.
- Keep baby upright and always supervise during meals.
