Salmon is a soft, flavorful fish that’s perfect for babies starting solids. It’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids (DHA), vitamin D, and protein—nutrients that support brain development, bone strength, and immunity. Its naturally tender texture and mild flavor make it an easy and nutritious first introduction to fish.

Nutritional Information
Salmon is loaded with healthy fats, especially DHA and EPA, which are essential for brain and eye development. It also provides vitamin B12, selenium, and iodine to support metabolism and thyroid function. Choose wild-caught or responsibly farmed salmon where possible. Fresh, frozen, or canned (in water, no added salt) are all suitable options—just ensure bones and skin are removed before serving.

Baby-Led Weaning

  • Finger food: Offer soft flakes of cooked salmon that should squish easily between fingers.
  • Texture: Moist and tender—avoid dry, overcooked fish.
Safety: Remove all bones carefully before serving.

6–8 months

  • Puree: Steam or bake salmon until flaky and blend with breast milk, formula, or vegetables for a creamy puree.

9–11 months

  • Offer small, soft flakes or mashed salmon pieces for self-feeding.
  • Mix with mashed sweet potato, rice, or avocado for added flavor and texture.
  • Try soft salmon patties made with egg and breadcrumbs (baked or pan-seared).

12+ months

  • Serve bite-sized salmon pieces or small chunks mixed into pasta, fish cakes, or wraps.
  • Explore mild seasoning and herbs for flavor.
  • Encourage utensil use and self-feeding with varied textures.

Choking hazards & safety

  • Whole or firm fish chunks and bones are major choking hazards.
  • NEVER offer raw or undercooked salmon to babies.
  • ALWAYS cook thoroughly until the flesh flakes easily and ensure all bones are removed. Avoid serving large, chewy pieces—salmon should squish easily between fingers.
  • Keep portions moist to prevent dryness, and always supervise your baby while eating fish.
