Peas are small, sweet legumes that babies often enjoy for their mild flavour and soft texture when cooked. They provide vitamin C, vitamin K, fibre, and plant-based protein, supporting immunity, digestion, and healthy growth. Their natural sweetness makes them an easy early vegetable for most babies.

Nutritional Information
Peas are rich in antioxidants, folate, iron, and carotenoids that support eye and brain development. Choose bright green peas without wrinkles; frozen peas are an excellent, nutrient-rich option. Canned peas can work if unsalted and rinsed well.

How to serve peas by age

Baby-Led Weaning

  • Finger food: Form mashed peas into soft patties or mix into mash so pieces should squish easily between fingers.
  • Mashed: Smash cooked peas with a fork to remove roundness and use as spread
Safety: Whole peas are unsafe at this age unless fully smashed.

6–8 months

  • Purée: Steam peas until very soft, then blend smooth; add water or breastmilk for consistency.

9–11 months

  • Offer smashed peas mixed into quinoa, rice, eggs, or soft veggies.
  • Add to soups, stews, or fritters for varied textures.
  • Soft whole peas can be offered if baby shows good chewing skills, but lightly press them to flatten.

12+ months

  • Serve whole soft peas to support pincer grip.
  • Add to pasta dishes, fried rice, curries, or veggie patties.
  • Introduce raw peas only if very soft and easily mashed; cooked is still safest.

Choking hazards & safety

  • Whole peas are small, round, and slippery, making them a major choking hazard, especially under 12 months.
  • NEVER offer raw or firm peas to babies.
  • ALWAYS smash or flatten peas for younger eaters so they lose their round shape. Ensure cooked peas should squish easily between fingers before serving.
  • Always supervise meals closely, especially when serving small foods.
