Longan is a sweet, juicy tropical fruit popular in many East Asian, Southeast Asian, and Caribbean households, with a floral flavor similar to lychee. It provides vitamin C, copper, and antioxidants that support immunity, skin health, and overall development. Once fully peeled, deseeded, and cut safely, longan becomes soft and tender enough for babies.

Nutritional Information
Longan contains polyphenols, potassium, and fibre, which help with digestion and healthy growth. Choose longans with firm shells that crack easily when squeezed and whose flesh is translucent and juicy. Fresh or frozen, unsweetened longan is suitable—avoid canned longan in syrup due to high sugar content.

How to serve longan by age

Baby-Led Weaning

  • Finger food: Offer large, flattened pieces only- never whole longans. Pieces should squish easily between fingers.
  • Grip tips: Press pieces lightly with a napkin to reduce slipperiness.
Safety: Remove seed entirely and avoid round, intact pieces.

6–8 months

  • Purée: Peel and deseed completely, then blend the flesh until smooth; mix with yogurt or oatmeal to thicken.

9–11 months

  • Serve soft, seed-free half-moons or mashed chunks once chewing improves.
  • Mix finely chopped longan into porridge, rice pudding, or fruit blends with banana or mango.
  • Keep pieces soft, flattened, and non-round.

12+ months

  • Offer small, pincer-grip–friendly pieces only when chewing skills are strong.
  • Add longan to smoothies, soft fruit salads, or lightly cook into compotes.
  • Encourage toddlers to practise spearing soft pieces with a fork.

Choking hazards & safety

Whole longan is a major choking hazard due to its small, round, slippery shape and large hard seed.

NEVER offer whole longans or pieces containing any part of the seed.

ALWAYS cut longan so it should squish easily between fingers and flatten pieces to remove roundness. Slippery textures can slide quickly toward the airway, so use grip aids.

Keep baby seated upright and always supervise every bite.
