Carrots are a bright, naturally sweet vegetable that many babies enjoy once cooked until very soft. They provide beta-carotene (vitamin A), vitamin C, and fibre, supporting vision, immunity, and digestive health. When properly softened, their smooth, mild texture is easy for babies to handle.
Nutritional Information
Carrots offer antioxidants, potassium, and B vitamins, which help support growth and healthy metabolism. Choose firm carrots with vibrant colour and no cracks. Fresh is ideal, but frozen pre-cut carrots work well and cook quickly; avoid canned varieties with added salt.
How to serve carrot by age
Baby-Led Weaning
- Finger food: Offer thick batons or long wedges that should squish easily between fingers.
- Grip tips: Slightly textured, steamed pieces help grip.
- Safety: Ensure zero firmness—carrot must be fully cooked and not roasted to dryness.
6–8 months
- Purée: Steam or boil carrots until extremely soft; blend smooth with water, breast milk, or formula.
9–11 months
- Serve thin shredded carrot, large steamed sticks or mashed carrots with small lumps, or mix into lentils, rice, or scrambled eggs.
- Offer carrot patties or fritters for self-feeding.
- Increase texture gradually to support chewing skills.
12+ months
- Provide small soft cooked cubes or thin shredded carrot for pincer-grip practice.
- Offer lightly steamed matchsticks, add to soups, stews, curries, or vegetable stir-fries.
- Raw carrot should be very finely grated only; larger raw pieces are unsafe until much older.
Choking hazards & safety
- Raw carrot sticks, rounds, and firm roasted pieces are a major choking hazard due to their hard, dense texture.
- NEVER offer raw coins or chunks to babies or young toddlers.
- ALWAYS cook carrots until they should squish easily between fingers, ensuring no crisp edges remain. Slippery round cuts also pose a risk; cut lengthwise for safer shapes.
- Always supervise during meals.
