Bottle gourd, also known as lauki or calabash, is a mild-tasting, hydrating vegetable that becomes very soft when cooked—ideal for babies beginning solids. It provides vitamin C, potassium, and fibre, supporting immunity, hydration, and healthy digestion. Its gentle flavour and smooth texture make it easy for babies to accept and digest.
Nutritional Information
Lauki contains antioxidants, B vitamins, and essential minerals that help support energy levels and gut function. Choose gourds with smooth, pale green skin and firm flesh; avoid those that feel too soft or have a bitter smell. Fresh lauki is most common in South Asian, African, and Caribbean cooking, and it should always be peeled and thoroughly cooked for babies.
How to serve bottle gourd / lauki by age
Baby-Led Weaning
- Finger food: Offer thick strips or wedges of fully cooked lauki that should squish easily between fingers.
- Texture: Ensure pieces are soft, moist, and slippery enough for gums to mash.
Safety: Always remove tough seeds and avoid raw or semi-cooked pieces.
6–8 months
- Purée: Peel, remove seeds if large, steam or boil until soft, then blend with water, breast milk, or formula.
9–11 months
- Serve soft bite-size pieces mixed with lentils, khichdi, soups, or coconut-based stews.
- Mash with rice, yam, sweet potato, or beans for self-feeding.
- Offer cooked half-moons or small spears that remain very tender as chewing skills develop.
12+ months
- Provide small cubes or slices for pincer grasp practice.
- Add to curries, stir-fries, callaloo-style dishes, or lauki dal.
- Incorporate into fritters, pancakes, or stuffed flatbread for varied textures.
Choking hazards & safety
- Raw lauki is firm and a major choking hazard, so NEVER offer it raw.
- ALWAYS cook until it can squish easily between fingers and remove any large or hard seeds.
- Slippery pieces may shift in the mouth, so cut into manageable sizes for age.
- Avoid firm, stringy sections near the skin. As with all solids, always supervise and ensure the texture stays soft and mashable.
