Sweet Nature
Tropical fruits perfect for your baby
Fruits are nature’s sweet treats, and they are a wonderful way to introduce your baby to a world of flavour. The tropics offer an abundance of delicious and nutritious fruits that are perfect for your baby’s first foods. Their natural sweetness makes them an instant hit with little ones.
Tropical Treasures for Your Baby
Many fruits from African and Caribbean regions are soft, easy to prepare, and packed with vitamins.
| Fruit | Key Nutrients | Baby-Friendly Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Mango | Vitamins A and C | Choose a ripe, soft mango. Peel it and offer the soft flesh as a purée or in a mesh feeder. You can also give soft, small pieces as finger food for older babies. |
| Papaya (Pawpaw) | Vitamin C, enzymes for digestion | The soft texture of ripe papaya is perfect for babies. Simply mash the flesh with a fork. |
| Avocado | Healthy fats, potassium | Often called a “superfood,” avocado’s creamy texture and mild taste make it an ideal first food. Mash it on its own or mix with banana or yam. |
| Banana | Potassium, energy | The ultimate convenience food for babies. Mash it with a fork for a quick and easy meal. |
Cooked Fruits: Expanding the Options
Some fruits are best offered to your baby once they have been cooked to soften their texture.
- Plantain: While it’s often treated as a vegetable, ripe plantain is botanically a fruit. When baked or boiled, it becomes soft and sweet, perfect for mashing.
- Breadfruit: A versatile staple, breadfruit can be roasted or boiled until soft. Its texture is similar to potato and it has a mild, pleasant taste.
A Note on Fruit Juice
While whole fruits are fantastic for your baby, it’s best to avoid fruit juice, especially for babies under one year old. Juice is high in sugar and lacks the beneficial fibre found in the whole fruit. The best drink for your baby is always their usual milk and, from 6 months, sips of water with meals.
Offering a variety of fruits helps to ensure your baby gets a wide range of vitamins and minerals. It also helps to train their palate to enjoy the natural sweetness of fruits, which is a much healthier alternative to foods with added sugars.
