Essential Gear & Prep: What You Really Need
While there are countless baby feeding products on the market, you only need a few key items to get started. The focus should be on safety, ease of use, and developmental appropriateness.
| Category | Essential Items | Why It's Essential |
|---|---|---|
| Seating | A good high chair. | Must provide proper back and foot support to ensure a safe swallow. Look for a chair that allows for a "90-90-90" degree posture at the hips, knees, and ankles [4]. |
| Bibs | Silicone or waterproof bibs with a pocket. | Baby-led weaning is messy! A good bib will save you from constant outfit changes and make cleanup easier. |
| Tableware | Suction bowls and plates, and soft-tipped spoons. | Suction-bottomed tableware stays put, reducing frustration for your baby. Spoons with soft tips are gentle on their gums. |
| Cups | An open cup or a straw cup. | It is recommended to start practicing with a cup around 6 months of age to help develop oral motor skills [4]. |
Many parents also find a splash mat to place under the high chair and plenty of washcloths to be invaluable for managing the inevitable mess.
Remember, the goal is to keep it simple. You do not need expensive gadgets to have a successful weaning journey.
